While fans are obsessing about who Negan killed during The Walking Dead Season 6 finale, the showrunners are thinking of ways to torment fans after the Season 7 premiere.
Director Greg Nicotero reiterated this point during The Walking Dead panel New York Comic Con 2016. Nicotero went on to say filming The Walking Dead Season 7 premiere was the most grueling two weeks of his time on the show. However, the cliffhanger everyone hated gave the show the opportunity to really dig into heavier storylines in the rest of the season.
“Because everybody knows how the season ended last year, that someone’s gonna go, it was more of a challenge going into it this year knowing what people are going to expect,” Nicotero said. “For me, some of the most amazing moments are found not where you’re going to expect them when you watch the first episode. There are some unbelievable moments and performances that’ve come out of the fog and the haze and the post-traumatic stress of the actual moment that set the stage for the entire season.”
Basically, the Lucille victim won’t be the saddest moment of The Walking Dead Season 7. The internet seems to think Maggie is the one Negan will kill first, but we don’t think The Walking Dead wants to step into Game of Thrones territory a la Red Wedding.
One fan took to Twitter to point out what they believe is Maggie’s wedding ring in the pile of mush shown at the end of The Walking Dead Season 7 teaser. Don’t get us wrong, Negan would totally kill a woman. Still, killing a pregnant Maggie might be too much for viewers. However, Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie on the show, did get emotional during The Walking Dead panel.
