Nintendo is finally giving its Switch Online service a massive revamp, according to new reports, and it would focus on upgrades to the platform as it has more or less stayed the same for years.
A new datamine is now suggesting that Nintendo is finally working on a meaningful update to the service, and the details point to something fans have wanted for a long time.
Nintendo Is Updating Switch Online After Years
So for some reason: NES, SNES, GB Nintendo Classics apps have been updated to a major version bump. I have looked very quick, please wait a bit for me to look deeper, but it is worth the major update.

A dataminer called Yakumono recently shared on Bluesky that a massive revamp is coming from Nintendo to improve the Switch Online platform significantly.
Since the introduction of the Nintendo Switch Online service, the Japanese gaming company has rarely improved or revamped it. While some thought it would change with the Nintendo Switch 2, it did not.
Outside of adding additional retro consoles to expand the Classic Games Library, such as the N64 or the GameCube, the service is largely the same as when it launched in 2018.
Changes to Nintendo Switch Online do not happen often, and Nintendo has long maintained almost the same service throughout its almost a decade of operation in the market.
Nintendo Switch Online Major Revamp Is Coming
Digging through the files of recent Nintendo Switch Online updates, dataminer Yakumono unearthed something significant as the NES, SNES, and Game Boy Nintendo Classics apps have been updated with a major version bump. In this update, Nintendo has implemented challenges that the dataminer describes as akin to "NES Remix," though right now, those challenges cannot be accessed yet.
"NES Remix" was a Wii U era initiative from Nintendo that featured short, timed challenges built around classic NES games, alongside what the company called "remixed" versions of those same games to create a fresh experience.
If the challenge system found in the datamine functions similarly, it would represent a substantial new layer of engagement for subscribers who already have access to the Classic Games Library.
What Changes Will Nintendo Bring?
According to ComicBook Gaming, the datamine notes that the challenges are only for specific games rather than the entire library, though the expectation is that Nintendo would eventually roll out challenges that extend further across its catalog over time.
The dataminer also revealed that instructions within the files mention using the NSO Home Menu app to access the challenges. However, it is known that there is currently no in-app menu, which indicates that this feature is a work in progress and may not be finished yet.
The latest discovery was found within Nintendo Switch Online's update files, but unfinished features found in a datamine do not always make it to consumers in the final form the files suggest. Nintendo has a history of quietly testing and shelving features before they ever go live.
As per ComicBook, the information was pulled directly from the mined data of the Nintendo Switch Online's latest update, so fans and gamers should take this information with a grain of salt. The publication suggested that this could very well be remnants of previous works that the Kyoto-based gaming giant has scrapped.
Should Nintendo be working on this as of press time, it could be possible that this does not make it into a public release.
