The "Uncharted" series is reportedly getting a massive reboot, according to the latest reports that claim that the studio behind the much-loved title is already working on it.

PlayStation and Naughty Dog are reportedly working on the reboot. However, instead of developing a new game for the series, they will bring back all mainline games.

'Uncharted' Series Reboot Reportedly Coming

Host Jordan Middler recently revealed in an episode of the "VGC Podcast" that a new "Uncharted" game is on the way from PlayStation.

Middler, who is a well-known insider and has plenty of accurate scoops pertaining upcoming titles, did not provide any additional information or insight to this new "Uncharted" reboot.

"Obviously, a new 'Uncharted' is coming, like it's on the way," Middler said. "But they [PlayStation] left Uncharted at its peak and didn't do a new one for a very long time."

The "Uncharted" series last saw a major release with "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" in 2016, followed by the standalone expansion "Uncharted: The Lost Legacy" in 2017. Since then, Naughty Dog has shifted its focus to "The Last of Us" franchise and other internal projects, leaving the treasure-hunting series untouched for the better part of a decade.

PlayStation, Naughty Dog Already Developing Reboot

Naughty Dog and PlayStation are picking up from where they left off a decade ago with the last mainline release of the franchise, with the studio still tied to this new "Uncharted" development, as per ComicBook Gaming.

While longtime Naughty Dog director Neil Druckmann is currently focused on "Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet," fellow director Shaun Escayg, who previously directed "Uncharted: The Lost Legacy," has teased that he is working on a new project within the company.

Based on Escayg's most recent hints on social media, the project he is working on could be related to "Uncharted," although he has yet to confirm anything outright.

Escayg's involvement would make narrative sense given his history with the franchise. His work on "The Lost Legacy" demonstrated that he is capable of leading an "Uncharted" project without series creator Amy Hennig or longtime directors Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann taking the wheel.

The combination of his social media teases and Middler's direct statement has made the possibility of a new entry feel considerably more real than it did just weeks ago.

Will There Be a New Game?

According to ComicBook's speculations, the new "Uncharted" title from PlayStation would not end up being "Uncharted 5" as franchise protagonist Nathan Drake saw his story conclude with the events of "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End."

As such, the next installment in the series would likely be a full reboot, which could shift the focus away from Drake, his family, and friends entirely.

Sony previously celebrated the 10th anniversary of "Uncharted 4" earlier this year by dropping free PSN avatars and a profile background, which at the time stirred speculation about what the studio had planned.

A reboot would give PlayStation a clean slate to introduce a new protagonist while keeping the globe-trotting, action-adventure spirit of the franchise intact.

PlayStation has not officially confirmed anything related to a new "Uncharted" project.
