Rick Grimes will have hope for the future by the end of The Walking Dead Season 7, even if it’s for a brief moment.

Showrunner Scott Gimple promised the second half of The Walking Dead Season 7 will have a different feel. In fact, Rick might actually have some happy moment in the show.

“It propels us into a very different half season from the one before it,” Gimple told Entertainment Weekly adding, “Before the end of that very first episode back, you will see Rick Grimes smile.”

Rick desperately needs a win. Negan showed up in Alexandria and sliced Spencer open. Rosita got Olivia killed. Daryl might be back, but Eugene is Negan’s new hostage, which complicates everything again. Now, Rick is harboring Maggie, who Negan believes is dead, and Daryl. There are so many things working against him.

Not to mention that someone in Alexandria might become a turncoat. Lennie James, who plays Morgan on the show, told ComicBook.com the war will force people to pick sides and some people won’t choose to fight with Rick.

“We’re about to go to war, and the second block [of eight episodes] is about meeting the protagonists and certain events that are going to decide what sides people take. And it’s not going to be a clear division of labour, let me say,” James said. “There are some people who go to the dark side who are going to take you by surprise, and there are some people who are going to come over to the light – and that’s all a matter of perspective.”

At least Rick has Carl, Michonne and Judith. Despite losing so many of his loved ones, Rick is fortunate to still have his family. Maybe there will be a Richonne moment to balance out the darkness. The show can get pretty heavy.
