The Walking Dead comic book fans might see a lot more nods to the source material this season. The Walking Dead director Greg Nicotero confirmed Season 7 will follow Robert Kirkman’s work a little more closely than the AMC series has in the past.
Nicotero explained the production team’s vision for the series during an interview with ComicBook.com. Here’s what Nicotero had to say about bringing some comic book moments to life:
"There are some great moments from the comic books that we're going to get a chance to experience. To me it feels like we may be a little closer in nature to certain beats in the graphic novel than we have in the past, but that could just be my interpretation of it."
The show has taken its creative liberties when it comes to the source material. For example, Michonne and Rick are best friends, not lovers, in the comics. Judith and Lori died on the same day. Abraham gets shot in the head with an arrow, not Dr. Denise. Morgan and Michonne have a fling before he dies. Carol is dead. And the list goes on.
However, there have been several iconic visuals pulled straight from the comics. For example. Rick’s fight with Jessie’s husband in The Walking Dead Season 5 was straight out of the comics. Watch the video here for a reminder of the fight. Carl getting shot in The Walking Dead Season 2 also happened the same in the comics and Carl losing his eye. In fact, every bad thing that’s happened to Carl in the show has happened in the comics, with the exception of baby Judith still being alive.
One comic book moment we’d like to see in the show is the first meeting between Rick, Ezekiel and Jesus. It’s a pivotal moment in the comic books where we learn a lot about Ezekiel. It’s hard to gauge whether he’s friend or foe at first, but this meeting is the spark that ignites a war.
The Walking Dead Season 7 premiere airs Oct. 23 on AMC.
