There was some tension in The Walking Dead writers’ room regarding who to kill in the Season 7 premiere. In fact, the decision about which character to make Negan’s victim was not a unanimous one.

The Walking Dead director Greg Nicotero recently spoke to Variety about the decision to kill off a major cast member. We know Negan’s victim was to the right of Rick from the teaser released during New York Comic Con 2016 . This means Michonne, Daryl, Abraham, Glenn, Rosita and Maggie are on the chopping block. The decision to kill off a main character wasn’t an easy one, but it needed to happen to move the story along.

“It’s really about propelling the story forward,” Nicotero told Variety . “I remember when I found out I was upset, and the first thing I thought was, ‘I wonder who else it could be?’ But you have to understand that certain characters will propel different people into different directions. It wasn’t a matter of a unanimous vote, but we have a very important story to tell and we have to honor the direction that the show will go. The hardest thing on our show is acknowledging who has got to go.”

Nicotero also recommended fans have tissues nearby, because The Walking Dead Season 7 premiere will be an emotional one. The worst part will be watching the show without Michonne, Daryl, Abraham, Glenn and Maggie . Let’s be real, the only person who would really cry over Rosita’s death at this point is Abraham. Rosita is badass, but she’s not a major character. She really doesn’t have a connection to Rick, so her death wouldn’t hurt him as much.

However, we are ready to move on from the “Who did Negan kill?” hype. It’s gone on long enough. Some fans will probably be crying out of relief knowing it’s finally over. The real fun begins once Rick’s group returns to Alexandria and deal with their new life. The Walking Dead Season 7 premieres Oct. 23 on AMC.
