Lennie James has no patience for fans trying to fast-talk their way to finding out who Negan killed in The Walking Dead Season 7 premiere.

James, who plays Morgan in the show, admitted to Entertainment Weekly it got so bad he had to stop answering questions about his work days to his friends and family. They would try to get it out of him by asking who was on The Walking Dead set, which James quickly realized was a roundabout way of them trying to eliminate potential Negan victims .

“Everybody tries to get clever about it,” James told EW . “So everybody tries to kind of catch you out. Everybody asks who you’re filming with this particular day, or ‘Who did you see today?’ Or ‘Who did you have dinner with today?’ Or ‘Please send such and such my love’ — all trying to figure out what your reaction is going to be. And these are members of the public, these are friends of mine, these are members of my family all trying to ask the question that may well kind of catch you out.”

Funny thing is, James probably won’t be interacting with Rick’s group, at least not right away. Morgan and Carol are headed to The Kingdom after asking a few members for medical help. Carol was shot in the leg by a Savior after she ran away from Alexandria. Morgan would never leave Carol in a strange place, even if he did trust the people of The Kingdom. So it’s unlikely James has filmed many scenes with Rick’s crew, at least for the first half of the season.

James teased a little bit of what’s to come during a special The Talking Dead preview special for The Walking Dead Season 7. James explained why Morgan is still around and why Rick needs him now more than ever before, especially with Negan entering the picture.

"Morgan ends up on the road to the Kingdom," James said during The Walking Dead special. "It will be interesting and one of the things that excited me about the episodes coming up is how Morgan survives in this particular group without Rick as an anchor and without Rick over his shoulder saying, 'I'm gonna put you in this cell.' This is Morgan meeting people as Morgan, who have no knowledge of him and have no knowledge of his history. One of the things that's most interesting to me about Morgan is he smiles in the Kingdom. It will be interesting to find out why that happens."

The Walking Dead Season 7 premieres Oct. 23 on AMC.
