Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman revealed a hard truth to a New York Comic Con 2016 panel crowd regarding his comic books : Glenn was always going to die.

Before you panic that’s not to say Glenn won’t make in the show. Kirkman was specifically referring to his comic book series.

"It was always supposed to be Glenn. Glenn was supposed to die earlier in the comic but then I changed my mind,” Kirkman told the panel crowd.

Kirkman knew it was time to kill off Glenn when Negan came into the picture. He didn’t want to kill Carl or a pregnant Maggie because they were too important to the storyline. Unfortunately, Kirkman always knew Glenn wouldn’t survive. Kirkman also didn’t want to go with a smaller character because it wouldn’t have had the same impact on the readers.

Let’s hope the Lucille death has the same impact on the show viewers as it did on comic book fans. Kirkman didn’t confirm who Negan kills in The Walking Dead Season 7 returns, but recently teased during an interview with Entertainment Weekly what Negan’s introduction means to the show.

“It’ll introduce a new level of fear for these characters that hasn’t really been present since the first couple of seasons,” Kirkman told EW. “That fear’s going to affect them all in different ways, but it will be pushing them apart in a lot of different ways as well, so there’s going to be a lot of division in the group and a lot of conflict.”

It’s a good mix up for The Walking Dead . Rick Grimes and his crew have survived horrible situations without losing anyone significant. The last emotional death for The Walking Dead was Beth’s in Season 5. Rick no longer hold the power in Alexandria, and he’s the lesser of two evils in this case. Yes, Rick made a mistake killing Saviors in their sleep, but Negan is vile and brutal in ways that would make the Terminus folk look like saints.
