AMC can get rid of Father Gabriel now, since The Walking Dead comics gave him one of the most brutal deaths in the history of the series.

That’s right, Father Gabriel is dead. Thanks to Negan killing Alpha, the communities are at war with The Whisperers . Beta, Alpha’s second in command, disemboweled a defenseless Father Gabriel who was hiding amongst a herd of walkers. Father Gabriel was climbing a watchtower when he fell and broke his ankle. Beta heard his cries and told Father Gabriel he would help him, but instead pulled out a knife and sliced him open. To make matters worse, a still-alive Father Gabriel slid down the ladder and became walker food.

That’s cold-blooded, man.

In the comics, Father Gabriel was quicker to adapt to the ways of the world than in AMC’s TV adaptation. Father Gabriel was a symbol of hope in Alexandria, preaching the word of God to the community. He provided faith when life seemed very dark.

However, AMC’s version of Father Gabriel was very annoying. The character was introduced in The Walking Dead Season 5 as a coward who hid inside a church to wait out the zombie apocalypse. He refused to let people inside the church, until one day he stumbled across Rick’s group while looking for supplies. He would cry a lot, and refused to pick up a weapon to defend himself.

It wasn’t until The Walking Dead Season 6 that Father Gabriel stepped up to prove he can defend himself and protect the group. Rick was slow to trust Father Gabriel, but the preacher earned it when he carried Judith out of the building covered in walker guts in the show.

Still, Father Gabriel might be safe in the TV series for now. The show has just introduced Negan and there’s a lot more story to get to before The Whisperers come into play. The Walking Dead Season 7 premieres Oct. 23 on AMC.
