Japanese publisher and developer GungHo Online Entertainment has just unveiled the first gameplay trailer for its upcoming strategic robot battle game titled Volta-X. The game is launching for the Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo eShop this summer.

Volta-X is set in an alternate reality on Earth wherein world peace was threatened by a Kaiju invasion. To answer this threat, the mysterious Dr. V unveiled to the world his greatest invention – The Voltas. These Voltas are mecha-like robots that are controlled by the most skilled pilots. After the elimination of the Kaiju threat, these Voltas were then used as the foundation of the most popular sport in the world – Volta battling. Players are now invited to assume control of a crew consisting of multiple Voltas and anthropomorphic pilots (such as Ian, Sheldon, Mr. Hornsby, and Benny) and join the World Volta Association - “the premiere destination for high stakes Volta Combat”. Customization of your Voltas will be key as you add and upgrade weapons, improve their defenses, and use on-the-fly decision making to outsmart your enemies in the heat of the battle. Rising through the ranks means more upgrades, weapons, and harder challenges.

Volta-X is a strategy title that mixes resource management with turn-based strategy. In the gameplay footage above, we are given peeks at most of its mechanics. First, we see the base building element of Volta-X. It reminded me of the popular strategy title Fallout Shelter, where your base layout is essential if you are planning to build the most efficient base possible. Choosing the right rooms is important too, as this supports your crew's needs and (I would assume) provide bonuses for your battles if they are met. As for the combat aspect, it looks like a mix of turn-based and real-time elements. Players are able to choose which weapons to use for each turn, but may also have options for defensive measures during certain phases. Lastly, players can participate in global battles with other players and also form clans to share and form certain strategies and builds.

Volta-X will launch for the Nintendo Switch later this Summer.
