With Tokyo Game Show 2019 now in full swing, we’re starting to see some of the first announcements, news and trailers drop from Japanese developers and publishers with regards to some of the most highly-anticipated titles. From September 12 to September 15, the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Tokyo is the center of amazing new stuff for all your favorite games, upcoming and otherwise, so be sure to check in with us the rest of this week as well as early next week for coverage of Tokyo Game Show 2019.

After going on a very successful roll with the last Resident Evil titles (Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 2) Capcom has now announced that their next project for the franchise will return to more of an action-oriented gameplay, highly reminiscent of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6. First teased a few days ago, Project Resistance is the publisher’s attempt at the growing trend of asymmetrical multiplayer titles, and for TGS we also got a first look at what to expect in terms of gameplay. Check out the gameplay trailer below.

As far as gameplay goes, what was shown in the trailer was interesting, but also a bit underwhelming to say the least. Project Resistance is running on the RE Engine, but the overall presentation feels a little bland. I think it’s because of that ridiculous HUD, which is really distracting.

That said, this is also a title that’s been outsourced to a studio called NeoBards Entertainment, best known for their work in porting different Capcom games for the Switch. The overall premise feels interesting, with a group of four survivors working together against a mastermind, who has kept the group trapped with direct control over gun-equipped cameras, traps, zombies, and the terrifying Mr. X. It’s a pretty good spin on the asymmetrical genre, and I, for one, hope that it manages to overcome the issues shown in the gameplay trailer.

Project Resistance will be released for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC at a yet-to-be announced date. Capcom has also announced a closed beta coming to consoles, running from October 4 to October 7. You can sign up for it if you’re interested here.
