The first homebrew for the Nintendo Switch is already out and it grants gamers access to the hidden copy of NES Golf found on every Switch console. While this homebrew doesn’t do much, it does open the door for what’s to come for the Switch.

As we learned last month, every Switch console includes a hidden copy of NES Golf. However, the game is locked behind a number of walls, the biggest requires the console to be set at a specific date. Thanks to hackers, the locks can be undone with a few programs. The whole process, including links to everything you’ll need, can be found in a post on GBATemp from user blinkzane.

It should be noted that by doing any sort of tampering with a Switch’s software is inherently risky. It is possible to mess up and completely ruin a console. Nintendo won’t offer a refund either, since this process will void any form of warranty. That said, Switch owners should be fine if they carefully follow along with trusted guides found online.

So far, this Switch homebrew is limited and may not be as exciting or console-changing as the options available for other consoles. However, it does help pave a way for bigger and more impressive projects in the future. The Switch homebrew community is just starting to pick up steam, so expect some new experiments to release over the next few months.

Still, it seems like Nintendo will make NES Golf available to play at some point. Based on screenshots found, it looks like the retro golf game was updated for the Switch to include motion controls. It would be an odd move to have a completed game, updated for modern consoles, to never be released for people to play. I wouldn’t be surprised to see NES Golf as one of the first classic games released when the Switch online service launches in 2018.

So what do you think? Are you interested in trying to break into your Switch to play NES Golf? Will you wait to see if Nintendo makes it easier to access? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
