The Surge 2
The Surge 2 FOCUS HOME / DECK 13

Deck 13 and Focus Home Interactive will publish a full sequel to The Surge, the publisher confirmed Wednesday morning, with a PC and console launch tentatively scheduled for 2019. We don’t know much about The Surge 2, which will be the project’s official title, but Focus Home says fans of the first game can expect to learn more about the sequel later this week.

The Surge cast players as Warren, a paraplegic man who entered a program he believed would restore his ability to walk. Instead, he awoke hours later in a failing manufacturing facility without any idea how to escape. He was mobile again, thanks to a new exosuit, but forced to fight an army of malfunctioning robots and other technological creations.

We had our fair share of complaints about The Surge. The game desperately needed better storytelling, and we really hope the sequel includes multiplayer support. But The Surge laid the foundation for what could become an incredibly interesting franchise, provided Deck 13 continues to sand down the rough edges on its Souls-like franchise.

Here’s what we know about The Surge 2, via a Focus Home’s press release:

The Surge 2 takes place in a brand new environment: a sprawling, devastated city with larger and more ambitious level design, made possible by Deck13’s upgraded and improved engine. Combat is more brutal and tactical than ever, with even more options thanks to an expanded limb targeting system. In addition, more abilities, weapons, implants, and drones give players a vast arsenal to build their character with, in their fight against the array of diverse new enemies and bosses.

The publisher says we’ll hear more about The Surge 2 later this week when Le What’s Next de Focus, an annual press event in Paris. If you were hoping to get your Surge fix a bit sooner, you may still be in luck. The original game’s first DLC (A Walk in the Park) is still available on PC and consoles, transporting The Surge’s protagonist to a CREO-built amusement park that has transformed into something decidedly more sinister. The expansion debuted late last year, but was easy to miss during the busy holiday season. It’s probably not going to last you the 12-plus months we’ll be waiting for The Surge 2. But it might at least get you to the first big TS2 content reveal later this week.

The Surge 2 is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The game debuts in 2019.

The Surge 2 Review - Compellingly Vicious, Satisfyingly Difficult
The Surge 2 is a perfect example of a sequel done right, and in this case Deck13 hit it out of the park to deliver an enhanced action-packed experience with the coolest-feeling combat and a great difficulty curve to match. While not entirely flawless, the sum of all its parts is a game worth the price tag and play time, as The Surge 2 steps out of the shadows of Souls-likes and into its own as a standout action RPG, one of the best I've played this year.
  • Exceptional combat mechanics.
  • Well-implemented RPG system.
  • Interesting level design, dense and filled with secrets and hidden routes.
  • Good difficulty curve, extremely tough at times but completely fair.
  • Improved storyline, with much more interesting characters.
  • Fair bit of replay value.
  • Great art, enemy and world design.
  • Forgettable music.
  • Some technical issues like animation jank and visual bugs.
  • Constant backtracking may prove to be tedious to some people.
