Since it’s in-depth gameplay trailer during E3 2017, fans of Super Mario Odyssey have only been treated to two Kingdoms in this new world, the Metro and Desert Kingdoms (outside of a Treehouse event). However, Nintendo treated us to a guided demo of the third Kingdom at San Diego Comic-Con and it’s another gem for the upcoming Nintendo Switch title.

The Wooden Kingdom is a new world and while one the surface it looks like a pretty straightforward area there’s a lot more going on than you may realize.

Here’s some of our observations from the guided tour through the Wooden Kingdom.

WOODEN KINGDOM IS ACTUALLY ENCLOSED

It may sound weird but here’s the deal, the Wooden Kingdom is based on a lush forest but it’s actually within a biodome. It seems that Wooden Kingdom is in the middle of an icy mountain range.

Within the biodome are tall trees, rivers and a ton of grass but there’s a lot more to the Wooden Kingdom than meets the eye. Super Mario Odyssey prides itself in giving longtime Mario fans a ton of nods to past titles and in the Wooden Kingdom, the rabbits from Super Mario 64 are back.

You can’t possess them with Cappy but you can hit them just like you can with humans so it’s a bit satisfying for those who had a hard time with them back in the day.

There’s also a lower level of the Wooden Kingdom that can be accessed by leaping off a cliff. Don’t worry, Mario will be ok but you’ll end up in the lower level of the kingdom where you’ll find a particular cold-blooded creature.

This aspect is a great example of how Super Mario Odyssey doesn’t handhold the players to find secret areas. It encourages exploration.

MECHANICAL ELEMENTS EVERYWHERE

What’s peculiar about the Wooden Kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey are that there are a lot of mechanic features. You’ll notice that there are robots around the main area but they leave you alone.

Also, the purple coins in this world are shaped like bolts. Not to mention the many platforms and cranes you can see as you make your way through this Kingdom.

There’s another element to this Kingdom than the demo let on so it’ll be interesting to see where it goes.

MORE CAPPY POSSESSIONS

The Cappy possessions in Super Mario Odyssey are some of the funniest and coolest elements of the game and the demo allowed us to see three new possessions.

A new enemy appears in the Wooden Kingdom and it’s plant-like and can extend its legs like stilts to help Mario get to hard to reach areas and push up platforms that would otherwise be too heavy for Mario.

The Fire Bro can be possessed and gives you the ability to throw fireballs like when Mario touches a fire flower but it also allows Mario to jump higher than normal.

Mario can also possess a tree, yes a tree, that he can use to hop around. It wasn’t shown what you can actually do with it but unfortunately there is no Mario moustache on the tree (perhaps it’s hidden underneath all of those branches and leaves).

And finally, down in the lower level of the Wooden Kingdom lied a sleeping T-Rex. Fans saw Mario possess a T-Rex in the E3 trailer but it looks like this is the place you can get to possess this terrible lizard.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to see the actual possession but it is possible in this area.

Super Mario Odyssey will release on the Nintendo Switch this October 27.

REVIEW SUMMARY
Super Mario Odyssey
10.0
Charming, Fun And The Best Game Of 2017
The Nintendo Switch title has slick controls, amazing visuals and a charm (there’s that word again) that I haven't come across before. The story is simple but supplemented with a large cast of new characters and worlds that expand the Mario Universe in a way that, hopefully, Nintendo can expand on for years to come. It’s accessible for younger players and challenging enough for veterans.
  • Visually pleasing
  • Great Story
  • Controls are amazing and uses Switch motion controls the best
  • Great new characters and environments
  • Could be more difficult
  • Camera angles can get annoying
