Apparently, there’s a new Super Mario Bros. animated film coming out next year. The film is releasing worldwide sometime in the holiday season of 2022. For North America, the release date is December 21. No other release schedule was revealed.

This information was revealed by the company's very own Shigeru Miyamoto during the Nintendo Direct show.

This upcoming animated film is being produced by Miyamoto of Nintendo and Chris Meledandri of Illumination. The screenplay will be written by Matthew Fogel, whose writing credits include The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part and a new film titled Minions: The Rise of Gru.

The movie is being directed by the team of Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. The two had previously worked on the animated show Teen Titans Go!, as well as the animated film Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.

So what else do we know about this new film? Miyamoto revealed the voice cast, which is rather impressive. They are:

  • Chris Pratt (Mario)
  • Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach)
  • Charlie Day (Luigi)
  • Jack Black (Bowser)
  • Keegan-Michael Key (Toad)
  • Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong)
  • Fred Armisen (Cranky Kong)
  • Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek)
  • Sebastian Maniscalco (Spike)
  • Charles Martinet (unnamed role)

In a statement, Miyamoto explained that the goal of the partnership with Illuminati wasn’t only to make a character-licensed film but one that offers a new piece of entertainment. For Miyamoto, he hopes the film is something that everyone can enjoy, whether they are familiar with the game or know nothing about it.

He went on to say that the production of the film is going well so far and they continue to learn a lot. Miyamoto asked fans to wait a little longer and they are excited to see the different characters of the game on the big screen.

Meanwhile, Illumination’s Founder and CEO Chris Meledandri shared that Mario and Luigi are truly iconic characters and they are honored with the chance to work with Miyamoto and Nintendo to bring everything to life. Meledandri said that this is unlike any film they had made.

What do you think about this news? Are you excited about the film?
