Star Fox Zero: Holy Crap, Star Fox Wii U Looks Better Than Star Fox 64

Nintendo just unveiled its first E3 2015 revelation: Star Fox Zero, formerly Star Fox Wii U. We knew this was coming, but wow, this looks so much better than we could have imagined. You know why? Because it looks like Star Fox 64. It’s been the big flaw in every Star Fox game since: Not enough like Star Fox 64. Well, this one finally is. Star Fox Zero has arrived.

Star Fox Wii U: Star Fox 64 Comes Again

But this ain’t just Star Fox 64 2: Star Fox 66. This is Star Fox Zero, formerly known as Star Fox Wii U. This game looks so, so much better than it did this time last year. The Arwing can transform into a walker at will! And the Landmaster is back! And a Gyrowing, whatever that is! And you can use different vehicles in different levels, which was not the case in Star Fox 64.

The game uses the Wii U GamePad, as we knew it would. You use that to aim and fire, and can use the gyroscope to fly (we’ll see how that works in practice… it’s my one big fear), with the television showing the stage itself and the GamePad showing the cockpit.

But those are all just details. Did you see that trailer? Star Fox Zero has the same aesthetic as the Nintendo 64 classic. It is broadly linear, but it has all-range mode. It has you and your crew, flying through the Lylat system. The graphics have been slimmed down from the more “realistic” style of Star Fox Assault, back to the classic look of 64. It looks incredible.

I have been gung ho for Star Fox Wii U, now Star Fox Zero, for a year. And yet I feared. I was wrong to fear. It seems that Star Fox Zero is the Star Fox we’ve been waiting for. Can’t wait until we know the release date.
