Star Trek: Discovery showrunner Bryan Fuller revealed the captain’s chair aboard the starship U.S.S. Discovery NCC-1031. It’s very much in line with classic captains’ seats, with the swept open armrests of Jean-Luc Picard’s luxurious, tan cathedra.

After the unveiling of the starship Discovery at San Diego Comic-Con 2016, we now know that the newest Trek ship has some classic, old lines (we’re pretty sure it’s set between 2161 and 2293). Fuller described the more classic aesthetic he’s going for, in an interview with Nerdist:

We were looking for a new aesthetic. We can’t just go back to the same aesthetic. You look at what J.J. Abrams did with that 2009 movie, which reinvented Star Trek in such a wonderful way and claimed that territory. So we had to strike new ground that had Star Trek in its DNA at a fundamental level.

The new captain’s chair seems very much in that spirit:

Sure, it’s far from complete, but you can already see the echoes of captains’ chairs past:

We still don't know who will be sitting in it (though we have some thoughts), but Star Trek: Discovery is making all the right moves so far. It will be available on CBS All Access in Jan. 2017.
