'Duet Night Abyss' Shocks Fans by Dropping Gacha for Good: Is There a Catch?

It's very rare for a gacha game to remove all gacha mechanics, but "DNA" has done that.

Gacha games are currently popular due to the challenges in collecting a character or a relic. People who love this genre have a fear of missing or FOMO, in limited-time events. However, "Duet Night Abyss" is shattering the status quo.

Developer Pan Studio left audiences stunned in their latest global livestream announcement of removing gacha systems entirely. Rather, all characters and weapons in the game will be unlockable by playing simply, and optional purchases relegated to cosmetic items only.

Paradigm Shift in 'Duet Night Abys' Gameplay

This revelation is a complete departure from the initial concept. Months ago, "Duet Night Abyss" was advertised as a conventional gacha game, with fans looking forward to time-limited systems, paid pulls, and stamina-based limitations. But Pan Studio released the news that all these mechanics have been completely abandoned, making way for a more player-oriented experience.

Now, all weapons and characters are accessible through gameplay without worrying about random draws. Even resource constraints, like stamina bars, have been entirely eliminated. The game was redesigned to enable players to play at their own speed without being gated behind paywalls.

Comparison to Warframe's Player-Driven Model

Plenty of fans have likened "Duet Night Abyss" to "Warframe," a game praised for its grind-to-progress model. Similar to "Warframe," "DNA" will enable players to unlock gear and characters through regular play, with the choice to speed things up by buying premium boosts.

The most important difference, however, is that "Duet Night Abyss" does not yet have a player-based currency marketplace, The Gamer reports. "Warframe's" success comes from its player economy, but "DNA" will only depend on grinding and cosmetic purchases as an optional expense. This begs the question of how sustainable the model will be in the long run.

Why Remove Gacha Now?

The choice might have been spurred by the competitive market. With titles such as "Genshin Impact" and "Honkai: Star Rail" taking off, "Duet Night Abyss "might have found it difficult to differentiate itself as just another gacha title. Pan Studio is turning things around instead, making the game a welcome relief in an oversaturated genre.

This change caught the gacha community off guard but has been widely encouraged. Players upset about exploitative monetization now view "Duet Night Abyss" as a game-changer with a focus on fairness and accessibility.
