As part of the company’s three-day announcement extravaganza, THQ Nordic has revealed the first of three new titles that it will be publishing.

The first is a remake of one of the hidden gems of the sixth generation of consoles. You may remember SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, which was a different game for each system that had it; if you were on an Xbox, PlayStation 2 or the GameCube, then it was a 3D platformer. If you played it for the PC, it was a point-and-click adventure game. There’s also a surprising Game Boy Advance version, which plays out as a 2D platformer instead.

THQ Nordic, in a series of tweets, has just announced that it will remake SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom for the current generation of consoles including the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Check out the tweets below, where THQ Nordic kicks off the announcement with the series’ iconic opening song.

The remake, which is entitled SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, is a full remake that will include both new and classic elements. Of course, in order to keep up with the times, this remake will also include a multiplayer mode, although it remains to be seen how this will look. Alongside the tweet, THQ Nordic has also released a short 20-second teaser which announces the title officially. Check it out below.

I’m ready, indeed. I actually played both the PC and PlayStation 2 versions, and they are absolutely charming in their own ways. The basic gist for both versions is that Bikini Bottom is being invaded by a robot force, orchestrated of course by Plankton. The console versions feature a more straightforward 3D platformer action style in which SpongeBob collects Golden Spatulas to further advance in the game. The title features that weird, yet incredibly endearing, humor featured in the show, which helped it achieve a cult classic status. The PC version is better-written in my opinion, and is styled like a trivia game show, with the premise based around a robot invasion as well.

Although there is obviously a lot of excitement for SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, THQ Nordic has announced that the title won’t be at E3 this year, and it’s still quite some time until you can play it – the game will be released sometime in 2020. We still have two more announcements to look out for, though, so stay tuned with us as we cover them once they drop.
