By now, most of you have seen Captain America: Civil War and realized how awesome Spider-Man can be. You probably forgot thanks to years of lackluster outings, courtesy of Sony, but now Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Homecoming is on the way. In addition, a new feature animated film is rumored for 2018 and could take a major departure from the friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man we all know and love.

According to Heroic Hollywood, Miles Morales – the half black, half Puerto Rican Spider-Man from the Ultimate Marvel Universe – is set to replace Peter Parker in an animated feature film premiering in 2018. This yet-to-be titled film will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller of The LEGO Movie and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs fame.

There are a couple working titles, however, Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man and The Ultimate Spider-Man: Miles Morales are options, according to HH’s report. So, who is this *other* Spider-Man, and how does he cross paths with the original Peter Parker?

According to Comic Book:

Miles Morales was created in 2011 by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli. Morales took over as the Spider-Man of the Ultimate Marvel Universe after the death of that universe’s Peter Parker. Miles first met the original Peter Parker in the Spider-Men crossover event, and the two crossed paths again in the Spider-Verse event. During the Secret Wars crossover, the Ultimate Universe and nearly all of its inhabitants were destroyed, but Molecule Man used his god-like powers to save Miles and integrate him into the new Marvel Universe as repayment for Miles giving him a hamburger to eat.

Animated or not, a biracial character as the lead superhero is a massive milestone for Marvel. With talented direction from Lord and Miller, Miles Morales could end up becoming a cinematic icon for millions of American children. Let’s hope the rumors are true.

The untitled Spider-Man feature is set to arrive in theaters Dec. 21, 2018.
