Publisher 11-bit Studios and developer State of Play Games have officially announced an August 3 release date for South of the Circle, coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and GOG. The narrative arcade adventure game was first released on the Apple Arcade service for iOS devices on October 30, 2020. Check out the latest trailer for South of the Circle below.

South of the Circle tells the unique story of Peter, an academic from Cambridge, set within the unrest of the Cold War era. In the present, Peter has crash-landed somewhere in Antarctica, and during his trek to search for help, another layer of the narrative presents itself, revealing Peter’s past, including a burgeoning love story between him and Clara, a fellow Cambridge academic.

Here are some of the game’s features as per the official Steam page:

  • Compelling and immersive narrative with a unique sense of time and place.
  • Nuanced emotional choices.
  • Fully motion-captured performances to achieve emotional realism.
  • Rich, authentic setting of the historical Cold War era.
  • Environmental storytelling woven through the narrative.
  • Distinguished and consistent art style.

South of the Circle is the most recent project from State of Play Games, the BAFTA-winning studio behind Lumino City. This award-winning title was first released in 2014 and won an Artistic Achievement Award in the BAFTAs for games.

South of the Circle features a narrative further enhanced by its characters, all played with weight and depth by known voice actors like Gwilym Lee (Bohemian Rhapsody), Olivia Vinall (The Woman in White) Richard Goulding (The Crown) Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones), Adrian Rawlins (Chernobyl), and Michael Fox (Downton Abbey).

Ahead of the game’s release on consoles and PC, State of Play Games has launched an official soundtrack for the game. Called Circles EP, a South of the Circles edition of the OST is now free to listen to on Steam, featuring a collaboration between the game’s composer and the one behind Frostpunk. You can listen to the soundtrack here for a feel for the game even before the August 3 release date.
