The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is gearing up to be one of the best smartphones of 2016, if rumors are to be believed. The phablet could easily dethrone its slate smartphone cousins, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, if consumers like what the manufacturer has in store. In addition to several new features, it appears the Galaxy Note 7 will include many of the top features found in Samsung’s most recent devices from 2016 and 2015.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge helped Samsung recover from a two-year sales slump that put the manufacturer, and many of its competitors, on notice that consumers would no longer accept devices they feel are not worth their expensive price tags. Since 2015, we’ve seen Samsung completely revamp the design of its premium smartphones and include and reintroduce many features highly coveted by consumers.

Many aspects of the Galaxy Note 7 are unlike any other smartphone in Samsung’s iconic Galaxy Note phablet line. Many are anxious to see what will be confirmed and refuted about the device come launch day. Here’s what we know about the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 so far.

Display

There is considerable buzz surrounding the Galaxy Note 7 display. According to rumors and leaks, the device will be the first Galaxy Note phablet to feature a dual-edge curved display. Though some leaks have shown prototypes of a supposed Galaxy Note 7 handset with a flat display, it appears the smartphone will feature a curved screen, but won’t have the “Edge” moniker associated with Samsung’s other curved screen smartphones.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is expected to feature a 5.7-inch Quad HD (2560 x 1440 resolution) Super Amoled display with a pixel density of 518 ppi. The last two Galaxy Note devices have also featured Quad HD displays; however, screen resolution isn’t the important factor to consumers it once was.

The Galaxy Note 7 may feature Corning’s latest protective glass casing, Gorilla Glass 5 . The manufacturer says this version of Gorilla Glass should be able to survive 80 percent of drops from shoulder height. Such a feature would be beneficial for a curved display Galaxy Note 7, considering Samsung’s older Edge devices have been prone to shattering at its edges when dropped.

Design

The Galaxy Note 7 is expected to feature Samsung’s signature glass and metal design from recent years. The device likely won’t look much different than the previous Galaxy Note 5, outside of the dual-edge display. Rumored dimensions for the device are 7.8mm x 153mm x 74.5mm

The device should also feature the S-Pen stylus, for which the Galaxy Note line is known, with the push-to-eject feature introduced on the Galaxy Note 5.

The smartphone should also include a non-removable battery, due to its unibody design, but should feature a mircoSD slot. Samsung may introduce a USB Type-C port for the device. Leaked press renders have largely confirmed the feature, as have leaks off a Samsung branded USB Type-C cable . Much like the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, the Galaxy Note 7 should include and IP68 water and dust resistance rating.

Several leaks have revealed color options including Black Onyx, Silver Titanium and Blue Coral. There are also pink and gold color options expected.

Specifications

The Galaxy Note 7 should get a power boost, particularly in memory capacity. The device may be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chip, at least in the U.S. There may also be an international model running the Samsung Exynos 8893 chip.

The Galaxy Note 7 may be Samsung’s first smartphone to feature 6GB of RAM, as well as to have a 64GB internal storage with its base model. There is also expected to be a 128GB storage model. The device’s microSD card should be able to expand memory up to 265GB.

Some rumors suggest the Galaxy Note 7 may feature a 3,600mAh battery, which would already be a power boost from the 3,000mAh cell in the Galaxy Note 5. However, other rumors suggest the device may feature a 4,000mAh battery, after the Galaxy S7 Active smartphone released with this type of battery. Samsung typically puts high-capacity batteries in its curved display devices. The Galaxy S7 Edge features a 3,600mAh battery, while the Galaxy S7 features a 3,000mAh battery. Galaxy Note devices typically have larger batteries than Galaxy S devices. However, the Galaxy Note 7 wouldn’t be very much larger than the 5.5-inch Galaxy S7 Edge, so a 4,000mAh battery might not be necessary.

Software

Since Android 7.0 Nougat has not yet released, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will likely features Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Several leaks have revealed what the Galaxy Note 7 TouchWiz user interface may look like. Users can expect a more minimalist-looking home screen (which doesn’t necessarily mean less bloatware).

The interface may include updates to the quick toggles and drop-down menu, may include smaller icons, a new feature called Blue Light Filter. The feature is comparable to the Night mode on the iPhone and gives the handset screen a tint for better visualization. The interface may also feature search bar within settings, which can also be used by voice control.

Though the Galaxy Note 7 is expected to run Android 6.0, many aspects of its settings, in particular, may look similar to the Android 7.0 design . Samsung may do away with the quick settings option. Text and icons may also feature lighter colors and have a less cartoonish look.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will likely have software features to accompany its S-Pen. In addition to standard features, including Action memo, Smart select, Screen write and S Note, the Galaxy Note 7 S-Pen may also include three new features: Glance, Dictionary and Speaking. Glance allows users to quick edit a video and turn a small section into an animated GIF. Dictionary and Speaking are expected to be translation and speech-to-text features, respectively. As always, users should able to add extra app shortcuts to their Air Command menu.

The Galaxy Note 7 is also expected to include features introduced on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, such as Always on Display , which acts like a screensaver for the smartphone. Users can display the time and date, a calendar, notifications or even just an image.

Camera

Rumors have suggested a 12-megapixel camera for the Galaxy Note 7. Since the Galaxy Note 5 featured a 16-megapixel lens, Samsung may be looking to improve the quality of its camera through means other than high megapixel counts. The Galaxy Note 7 camera may include a f/1.7 aperture, which could mean Samsung is further improving its low-light imaging.

Camera features may include geo-tagging, simultaneous 4K video and 9-megapixel image recording, touch focus, face and smile detection and Auto HDR. The Galaxy Note 7 camera is also expected to include the dual-pixel phase detection autofocus feature introduced on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. The feature captures multiple images and compiles them together in the perfect image configuration. The feature is similar to what professional photographers use to capture ideal shots.

The Galaxy Note 7 may also include a 5-megapixel front camera with a f/1.7 aperture dual video call and Auto HDR.

New Features

The Galaxy Note 7 is expected to introduce an iris scanner to Samsung’s smartphone line. Several leaks have revealed how the feature will work. Reports indicate Samsung worked with the Korean camera company, Patron , to develop the iris scanner camera module. The sensor will be located on the handset’s front, among the front-facing camera and other standard sensors.

Prior leaks have shown that the Galaxy Note 7 iris scanner captures an image of a user’s eyes, then analyses their irises to authenticate the device. Users must must hold the Galaxy Note 7 handset 25-35 cm away from their face and then align their eyes with the circles on the setup screen.

Recent reports also indicate the sensor has limitations that may hinder its functionality , including users wearing glasses, sun shades, color contact lenses or circular contact lenses. Problems could also arise if a user has had Lasik surgery or attempts to scan their irises in an area with too much light or insufficient light. However, when done correctly, unlocking a device appears seamless.

Price And Availability

Reports suggest the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 may cost €849 in Europe . Such a price would translate to $930 in the U.S.; however, currency typically does not convert directly. If the price is accurate, the Galaxy Note 7 would likely cost around $849 in the U.S. The price may also vary by carrier.

Recently, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) confirmed the Galaxy Note 7 is approved for use in the U.S. on the four major carriers, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. The device will likely also see availability on some regional carriers as well as popular retailers such as Best Buy and Amazon.

Reports also indicate the device is currently available for preorde r in Dubai, selling for AED 500. The preorders do not appear to be from online retailers. T-Mobile is also expected to offer a buy-one-get-one deal for the Galaxy Note 7 in the U.S. At this time it is not certain whether the deal is buy-one-get-one-free or buy-one-get-one-half-off.

Release Date

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will be announced Aug. 2 at an Unpacked event in New York City. Rumors indicate the device may be available in stores the same day, and T-Mobile may begin offering preorders for the device ahead of the launch event.
