Fresh off of Quake Champions ’ first closed beta weekend, which began last Thursday and ended earlier this week, id Software and Bethesda have released the latest in a series of trailers spotlighting the Quake Champions roster. And that should make it a little easier to wait out the remaining 24 hours before the Quake Champions closed beta returns on Thursday.

This week, id Software is showing off Clutch, a mining robot turned combatant thanks to “ a network malfunction during a routine data transfer. ” Clutch’s skills don’t harken back to that blue collar background, instead positioning him as the Quake Champions equivalent of a tank, but we imagine people will have some pretty divided opinions about the robot’s abilities. Clutch’s active ability, Barrier, can be used to block incoming attacks. The shield’s limitations aren’t clear -- so we don’t know if melee attacks or specific weapons can get through -- but the curved energy field will (briefly) make it near impossible to attack Clutch head-on.

The robot’s passive ability, Still Defense, will be similarly frustrating for those who like to get up close and personal. According to id Software, Clutch can “deflect attacks like a boulder”, though we’d be lying if we said the accompanying description ( or GIF example ) provided by the studio made it any easier to understand how the ability actually works. But fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out -- at least not those fortunate enough to receive an invite to the next Quake Champions closed beta test -- because id Software says Champions will open up to a slightly larger pool of testers on Thursday, April 13.
