It’s been the season for delays all around for a lot of games lately, as developers and publishers are looking to avoid a lot of the bad publicity and just overall negativity associated with workplace crunch. Just recently, Studio MDHR has delayed Cuphead’s The Delicious Last Course to a release date sometime in 2020, citing that the studio is avoiding crunch time for its developers and more hours to polish the game to what is expected of them.

They’re certainly not alone, as now, it appears that Psychonauts 2 from Double Fine is being delayed, this time to a 2020 release date. The announcement was made stealthily during a backer update on Fig, where Psychonauts 2 has been funded with over $3.8 million by more than 24,000 backers.

The update post talked about some of the major announcements made at E3, including Microsoft’s acquisition of Double Fine as a studio under the Xbox Game Studios label. Naturally, since Psychonauts 2 was promised a release on the Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4, a lot of people were left wondering if the PS4 version is going to make it considering the nature of the acquisition. The post addressed this, saying, “we have confirmed that we will be able to honor Psychonauts 2 for every platform that we have already promised here, and that includes bringing the game to PlayStation 4!”

It's good news, and certainly a welcome one following the many debacles of other studios reneging on promises made after certain deals with big-name companies – *cough* Epic Games Store *cough* – but it did come with one caveat though, and that is the delayed release date.

“There really shouldn’t be too many other noticeable changes for you at all, at least not for a while...with one notable exception: We’re now targeting next year for release,” the post states. “We know it’s always disappointing when you have to wait a bit longer, but we also know that you are an amazing, supportive bunch, who - just like us - want the game to be as good as possible.”

Delays aren’t always as bad as most players make them out to be, especially if the finished product is something you can truly enjoy. As with every other scenario, only time will tell if the wait will be good for Psychonauts 2 or not.

Psychonauts 2 will be released on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC sometime in 2020.
