Retro gaming is now taking center stage for console brands, with Sony's PlayStation joining the scene with the PlayStation 5 Pro, according to a new leak.

This feature would be exclusive to the PlayStation 5 Pro and would possibly be used for future console iterations like the PlayStation 6 should Sony still choose to make older-gen games available for the next-gen consoles.

PS5 Pro Update Leak: Retro Gaming Improvements

A new report from Moore's Law Is Dead revealed a massive update coming to the PlayStation 5 Pro, and its main focus is to help improve the retro gaming experiences available now on the console. This centers on the PS5 Pro's PSSR or the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution feature, which focuses on a specific upscaling technology that Sony made for the mid-gen console.

It was revealed that through this feature, PS5 Pro users may take a lower resolution games and run it through the upscaling technology designed by Sony and bring them to higher outputs. Through this feature, users may enjoy a retro game that can output up to 4K quality, and it also assures that it is not sacrificing a loss of visual fidelity in the process.

The update would change the base requirements of the PSSR feature on the PS5 Pro, particularly as it currently requires a game to have an 864p base resolution to upscale it to 4K. Games from the PS3, PS2, the original PlayStation, and the PSP, which only output at 720p max or lower, cannot enjoy this PSSR feature because of the base requirements, but this is about to change with this rumored update.

Sony is now reportedly working on the PS5 Pro's PSSR update that will essentially improve all available retro PlayStation games available from the service.

What to Expect From PS5 Pro's Update

It is important to note that this feature would be exclusive to the PS5 Pro only, particularly as the PSSR is exclusive to the mid-gen release and not to the original PlayStation 5 as well as the PS5 Slim. This would be a huge plus for PS5 Pro owners who are fond of exploring older PlayStation games from older-gen consoles, with the company also working on other improvements for the feature.

First, Sony is reportedly working on making it easier on the development side to bring this upscaling technology to the PS5 Pro as part of the update. That being said, this is still only a claim from the source, and it remains unconfirmed by Sony.

Currently, Sony already has a separate upscaling technology that works in place of the PSSR to bring old-gen games to better quality, making it more enjoyable for players who want to walk down memory lane.

Still, this rumored PSSR upgrade for the PS5 Pro would be the far superior experience for gamers that will take retro gaming to new heights.
