The Gen 3 update was huge for Pokémon Go. It brought in a handful of new Pokémon from the Hoenn Region (with more still to come) introduced a new feature that simulated the weather, but maybe the biggest update was an increase to the Storage System.

In Pokémon Go, trainers can only hold a certain number of Pokémon on their phone, which acts like the PC in the main Pokémon games. However, before Gen 3 the max storage was 250 with trainers able to purchase a Pokémon Storage Upgrade. For 200 coins, trainers could increase the storage by 50 and the max a trainer can go up to was 1000.

With the Gen 3 update, that maximum has been increased to 1500. And, as a gift to trainers, a complementary increase of 50 came in the update as well. So if you’ve noticed your Pokémon Storage has been upgraded, that’s the reason.

Of course, trainers can only obtain 50 coins every day in Pokémon Go from defending Pokémon Gyms. With the implementation of the Raid Battle system it’s a bit easier to get coins from Pokémon left at a Gym.

Trainers simply have to leave a Pokémon at a Gym that’s occupied by their respective team and once it is defeated, the Pokémon will be sent back to its trainer with the coins it’s holding. The amount of coins it holds depends on how long it is placed in that Gym.

A Pokémon’s motivation to fight plays a big part in how it defends its Gym. Trainers can feed their Pokémon any kind of berry to raise its motivation.

Pokémon earn one coin for every hour spent in a gym (that metric hasn’t been confirmed) but the best way to earn coins in Pokémon Go is to leave a Pokémon at a Gym (preferably during hours that people are at work/school) and continually feed it berries to keep fighting well.

It won’t be a surprise if Niantic decides to increase the Pokémon Storage in Pokémon Go whenever a new generation of Pokémon is introduced, but trainers will have to wait until 2018, at least, for that to happen.
