Pokémon Go players will be pleased to know that a brand new event is coming and will see the encounter rate of Grass-type Pokémon increase.

From the afternoon of May 5 to May 8, Grass-type Pokémon will appear in the wild more frequently. So if you’re low on a certain amount of Pokémon candy to strengthen some of your most powerful Grass types or need just a few more to evolve them, this will be your best chance to do so.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many Grass types currently in Pokémon Go. The only Grass-type Pokémon you can currently catch are listed below. (Note that this doesn’t include most final evolutions.)

Gen 1

Bulbasaur

Ivysaur

Oddish

Gloom

Bellsprout

Weepinbell

Paras

Parasect

Exeggcute

Exeggutor

Tangela

Gen 2

Chikorita

Bayleef

Hoppip

Skiploom

Sunkern

If you’re wondering what Pokémon to really search for, that depends on your area and your needs. However, with this sort of event if you don’t see a particular Grass-type Pokémon you will likely be able to find one of each of the above Pokémon listed.

But, you should really go out and find these five Pokémon during the Grass-type weekend event to help you fill out your Pokedex.

5. Sunkern

Ok, ok. We know you’re going to say Sunkern is one of the weakest Pokémon in the any of the games, but hear us out. Sunkern is special within Pokémon Go because it can only be evolved through the use of a Sun Stone, one of the five evolutionary items found in the mobile game when the Generation 2 update happened.

While you only need 50 Sunkern Candy to evolve it into Sunflora, you’ll need one Sun Stone. Evolutionary Items like the Sun Stone can be found randomly at PokeStops or you can gain a random evolutionary item when you visit a PokeStop for seven days in a row.

But, again, this item drop is random and you may get five King’s Rocks before you finally get a Sun Stone. Use this opportunity to gather enough Sunkern so when you’re ready, you can use that Sun Stone and add Sunflora into your PokeDex.

4. Hoppip

Hoppip is one of the few Grass-type with a three-stage evolutionary line. That means you’ll need 125 Hoppip candy to evolve it from Hoppip to Skiploom to Jumpluff.

Use the Grass-type weekend to catch as many Hoppip as possible so you don’t have to worry about walking with your Hoppip (3km walking distance) to get the amount of candy needed. Believe us, you’ll want to walk with a different Pokémon like Larvitar or Dratini to get the candy needed to evolve instead of Hoppip.

3. Bulbasaur

Number one in the PokeDex, the Grass-type starter of Gen 1 will be showing up more often during the special Pokémon Go event.

It’s been almost a year since Pokémon Go debuted on mobile devices. By now, many trainers will already have caught a Bulbasaur, Ivysaur and Venusaur but some others have not found enough to do so.

Trainers need 125 candy to evolve Bulbasaur through the entire line, so stock up during the weekend. You can also use the extra candy to power up your Venusaur to take into Gyms.

2. Oddish

The Oddish is very special in Generation 2, in that it’s one of the few Pokémon that has a split evolution. When you evolve Oddish into Gloom, you can choose whether to evolve it into Vileplume or Bellossom.

However, like Sunkern, Gloom needs a Sun Stone to evolve into Bellossom while Vileplume simply needs the 125 candy. And if you don’t have either evolution, use this event to catch as many as possible to finally get both, because that’s 250 total Oddish candy in all.

1. Chikorita

The Grass-type starter of the Johto Region, some trainers may have already seen enough Chikorita, but this weekend event will help those trainers looking to gather the 125 Chikorita candy.

And let’s face it, you can never have enough Starter Pokémon candy.

So what Pokémon do you hope to catch during the Grass-type weekend event in Pokémon Go? Let us know in the comments section below.
