Christmas presents hidden in Pokemon Go's code
Christmas presents hidden in Pokemon Go's code Silph Road

I might have jumped the gun a little bit by saying that there isn’t going to be a Pokémon Go Christmas event. Dataminers have uncovered a treasure trove of images and files that point directly to a brand new event coming to the game. It may not come as soon as Wednesday, but a weeklong event popping up a few days before Christmas seems pretty likely.

In the APK for the Apple Watch Pokémon GO app there were a few images that didn’t quite fit. There are six christmas presents that seem to be set in tiers ranging from bronze all the way to something really valuable, maybe Master? There’s also a new shop button specifically for the holidays with a tiny present on it.

A tiny piece of code might have given this event completely away, There’s a metadata attribute named “HasHolidayItems” that is appearing in relation to the shop. Those gift boxes will most likely be sold in the shop and could contain anything from extra Pokeballs to customizables for your Pokémon. Imagine being able to dress up your Snorlax as Santa Claus, I don’t think the world would ever be the same again.

There is no code saying you have to purchase these items, so it is possible that they might just drop randomly. My favorite theory circulating the internet has Delibird, the bird with a bag of presents, dropping a box after being caught. It would be ridiculous to release a few Generation 2 Pokémon near Christmas and the only Christmas themed Pokémon.

A Pokémon Go Christmas event would have to have a forced update, meaning you would have to update to a newer version of the game in order to use it.

This is all speculation, but it seems fairly rooted in fact. The Christmas event is coming, just when we have no idea.
