Joker from Persona 5 officially ‘joins the battle.’

A big new update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate releasing today is expected to finally launch Joker, a character from Atlus’ Persona 5. He was officially announced some time ago with a reveal trailer, showing the character receiving a coveted letter from Ultimate beckoning him to join Smash.

The update, which is version 3.0, also includes a new stage builder, video editor and Smash World. The options for the returning stage builder are much greater than those featured in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. 4. For instance, while in handheld mode, you can draw to create surfaces for the various characters to fight on. Moving and spinning platforms can also be created, allowing for greater variety in combat.

The video editor is a nice touch, too, which can be useful for various content creators. A variety of content, ranging from videos, custom stages and Mii fighters can also now be downloaded from other users. Streaming in-game is now also possible, and it will be handled by YouTube via the Smash World app.

Taking a closer look at Joker, it certainly looks and feels like a lot of work has gone into creating him as a character in Smash Bros. Besides his basic standard attacks and the inclusion of his grappling hook, Joker can also summon one of his Personas in the form of Arsene. Activating Arsene boosts the power of Joker’s attacks and also adds a neat block counter. The boosted special attack joins the other members of the Phantom Thieves and is incredibly stylish.

In addition to this, subtle styling of the stages and post-battle screens as well as interactions are something Persona 5 fans can look forward to and appreciate. The update also adds Mementos as a stage, which changes color according to the tracks being played. These includes songs from both Persona 3 and Persona 4.

Players who bought the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass already have Joker available to them. Otherwise, you may be able to purchase him for use separately through the Challenger Pack 1: Joker DLC which is available now for $5.99. The Fighters Pass however covers all future DLC characters and costs $24.99.
