Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky of Obsidian Entertainment have revealed a bunch of new information and updates to the highly-anticipated space RPG, The Outer Worlds. In a recent episode of the Game Informer Show, the duo discussed the game, development progress, and teased quite a few planned features such as a survival mode.

Obsidian Entertainment is the same studio behind one of the most successful titles in the Fallout franchise, Fallout: New Vegas. New Vegas’ survival mode was a hardcore challenge based on realism, and simulated the difficulties of surviving in a post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland. If The Outer World’s Survival Mode will be as robust and meaningful as the one found in New Vegas, then fans of the studio are definitely in for a treat. Apart from the teased game mode, Obsidian also discussed plans and progress for The Outer World's customization systems, character progression, loot system, and companions.

One thing I'm personally happy to hear about is the work and resources the studio is devoting to ambient companion banter. Like Fallout: New Vegas, The Outer Worlds will give players the chance to meet unique non-player characters and have these characters join their party as companions. In New Vegas, traversing the wasteland, battling enemies, and doing busy work like gathering materials was made infinitely more enjoyable with compelling companion banter and interesting dialogue.

The Outer Worlds is looking great so far, with a brilliant space-age theme, a vibrant environment, and plenty of colorful characters along the way. Fans of Fallout: New Vegas especially are excited to see what developer Obsidian Entertainment has in store for this upcoming title, and based on the official reveal trailer (below), it’s going to be a colorful, compelling, and chaotic barrel of fun.

Whether you’re a veteran of single-player open-world RPGs or a fan of space-age science fiction action adventures, The Outer World is definitely a title to keep an eye on as we head into the new year. We’re excited about this upcoming title from the makers of Fallout: New Vegas, but what about you? What do you think of a Fallout-like RPG set on the vibrant fringes of space, instead of a bleak post-apocalypse? What features and mechanics would you like to see in The Outer Worlds?
