Square Enix and Tokyo RPG Factory’s newest Japanese role-playing game, Oninaki, reveals new characters in its latest trailer.

Oninaki, an action-adventure JRPG, continues the legacy of the first two JRPGs Tokyo RPG Factory. Both I am Setsuna, released in 2016, and Lost Sphear, released in 2017, essentially embody the spirit of 1990’s JRPGs, and Oninaki is expected to follow this pattern.

Oninaki features people known as watchers. These people guide lost souls in a world where reincarnation is the way of life. The player will play the role of the young watcher Kaguchi, who takes on his duty without hesitation. He will be voiced by Tomohisa Hashizume. The trailer also reveals many of the other characters in the JRPG that you will encounter.

The first one is Linne, a mysterious girl the protagonist met before he became a watcher. Surprisingly, she hasn’t aged at all when he saw her again. She is suffering from amnesia and can’t even remember her name so Kaguchi named her after a flower called linnaea. Linne’s voice actress will be Shiori Mikami.

The second character is The Night Devil. He is a swordsman from the past who is hunting down Linne to unleash his anger on the world. Oddly enough, his voice character wasn’t disclosed by the company so we’ll have to wait to know why.

The third one is Kushi, the protagonist’s very own father figure who is both a great watcher and leader. He will be voiced by Tsuyoshi Koyama.

The last revealed character for Oninaki is Mayura, Kaguchi’s childhood friend and daughter of Kushi. She has a kind heart not only to lost souls, but also to her demons. She will be voiced by Lynn.

The game was announced last February, but other than the statement that it will be launched this summer, not much has been revealed yet. Tokyo RPG Factory has kind of a following, though, due to their expertise in the JRPG genre, so we’ll have to wait and see if this new JRPG is just as good or even better than Tokyo RPG Factory’s earlier creations. Oninaki will be available on platforms including PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Steam on PC.
