Around 30 minutes of new Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom gameplay is out this week, taking fans a tour of the game’s E3 2017 demo. There’s a little of everything in the new footage, from exploration and conversation to quests and combat. We even get to see a mid-game encounter against a level 30 villain that will demand both patience and attention from Ni No Kuni 2 players.

Bandai Namco and Level-5 deserve a lot of credit for the Revenant Kingdom demo shown at E3 back in June. Where many studios tend to focus on one specific slice of an unreleased project, Level-5 let fans have an early glimpse at a dizzying array of content. There are several unique environments, both indoor and outdoor, along with a handful of very large enemies. The Ni No Kuni 2 demo also includes new spells and other skills, along with attack strategies that can be used to expedite encounters. We even get more face time with members of King Evan’s party and some of the NPCs he’ll meet during his journey to reclaim his kingdom.

Unsurprisingly, given how easy (and pretty) it is to show off, combat played a big role in the game’s E3 demo. Almost half of the 30-minute reel is dedicated to King Evan’s encounter with a Thogg, a large creature that looks like some sort of strange bear/primate hybrid. It’s not exactly the game’s toughest challenge, since the creature is only level seven. But word on the show floor this year was that many people couldn’t beat the Thogg during their hands-on sessions.

The only real complaint we have about the new Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom footage is that it focuses on encounters some fans might not want to see before launch. It’s not the first we’ve seen of the Thogg; however, the second encounter shown in the game’s E3 demo seems like the kind of thing most people would rather experience from the comfort of their own couch.

For an early look at Ni No Kuni 2, set aside some time to watch Bandai Namco’s complete walkthrough of the game’s E3 2017 demo. Then head down to the comments section and let us know if you’re planning to pick up NNK2 when the game hits PS4 and PC next year.

Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom is in development for PlayStation 4 and PC. The game is scheduled to debut Jan. 19, 2018.
