Rumors of a new PlayStation 5 model launching next year have surfaced online. According to a report, Sony will launch a new PS5 next September with a detachable disc drive. The rumor comes from the insiders, claimed to be legit.

Furthermore, these same sources relayed that Sony plans to completely phase out the A, B, and C chassis currently being used in PS5 today. Besides that defining difference, the reportedly new D chassis will be almost identical to the A, B, and C chassis. But the real deal is the detachable disc drive, which will connect to the new PS5 model using an extra USB-C port on the back of the console.

As per the report, this new PlayStation 5 model will be sold on its own as a digital-only console or bundled with the detachable disc drive. The disc drives can also be purchased separately, meaning players can easily replace this part without shelling out tons of cash for a new console entirely.

If you’re worried that this new model will look off somehow due to the detachable disc drive, don’t fret. The sources claimed that the disc drive will not ruin the console's aesthetics and will attach to the main PS5 body without looking like an external add-on. It’s unclear just how Sony plans to implement this given that the USB-C port is in the back, so we’ll just have to wait and see how the company will do it.

If true, this rumor suggests that Sony may be taking further steps into the digitalization of the PlayStation platform. While this new console model may end up being the slimmest and lightest PS5 yet, it also comes with a few unknowns, and the most alarming is the pricing. Assuming that the price for the bundle with the disc drive remains close to the current disc PS5, then there would be no issues. However, there’s a chance that it will end up being more expensive, especially as Sony can use its modularity as a key selling point for interested players. It will be interesting to see if Sony goes through this route, given that the company has just recently raised console prices across the globe.
