Netflix's Castlevania Series Returns This Summer

Netflix has been slaying the anime game with its series of originals. While the anime adaptation of Castlevania never reached the levels of excellence the recent Devilman Crybaby did, it was still very much a reason to celebrate—it managed to spin an animated adaptation of a video game property and made it decent, for once. Spanning only four episodes, it took the pre-established Castlevania lore from Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and gave viewers a reason to become emotionally invested in the villain Count Vlad Dracula Tepes.

Unfortunately, the four episodes were so simple to blow through since they were so slick and polished. Before you know it, you’ve reached the end and there isn't any more to watch. Thankfully, series writer Warren Ellis has confirmed that a second season is still coming, and will in fact premiere this summer.

Ellis’ Twitter post responded to multiple questions fans had asked about the second season, which had previously been greenlit the same day the first season aired on the streaming provider. He confirmed the release date and number of episodes with a gif from the upcoming run.

The first season premiered July 7 of last year and followed demon hunter Trevor Belmont as he fought back against Dracula's force of demons, hellbent on taking revenge against the country of Wallachia. Alongside Dracula's dhampir (half-vampire) son Alucard and magician Sypha Belnades, Trevor faces some pretty impossible odds, but the Belmont family always has a few tricks up their sleeves, which quickly becomes apparent as you watch Trevor in action.

There's still a lot to explore in the new season, which will span eight episodes, as Trevor and company continue to stave off the demonic forces that threaten to wipe Wallachia off the map, and subsequently, annihilate all the humans who reside there. Hopefully, the animation quality will remain high, and the writing as whip-smart as the first four episodes, which only served as a delicious sampler of what the series could offer in the future.
