Some phenomenal numbers, but does it have the staying power?

Publisher Warner Bros. Games and developer Player First Games announced a significant milestone today for MultiVersus , the crossover brawler fighter title featuring various characters from properties under the Warner Bros. brand. In less than one month after its initial open beta release, the MultiVersus player base has now exceeded 20 million players, a very good figure considering that the game has not even released its full Season 1 roster yet. Check out the tweet from the official MultiVersus account below celebrating the 20 million players worldwide.

In an exclusive interview, David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (the gaming arm of the company), had this to say about MultiVersus’ success:

“For us, MultiVersus is such an important critical step into that free-to-play, high-definition gaming category that we believe we can really do something meaningful in, in this case with a collection of our IP, and building a game from scratch that’s designed for live services and cross platform. And we’re thrilled to see by the 20 million that fans are really responding to it.”

Given the colorful roster of characters, it’s hard not to see why MultiVersus has been very popular lately. With fighters like LeBron James, Arya Stark, Tom & Jerry, DC superheroes, and even Gremlin, MultiVersus makes use of the Warner Bros. catalog in a very solid way.

Another aspect that proved particularly helpful to Warner Bros. Games in achieving 20 million players even before a month has passed is the state of the competition in crossover fighters like MultiVersus. Up until a few months ago, the most popular crossover fighter in history, Super Smash Bros. from Nintendo, has remained relatively unchallenged in its dominance. MultiVersus entering the space alongside a very attractive free-to-play model has allowed WB to challenge Nintendo’s foothold on the genre and came away with resounding success with 20 million players.

MultiVersus is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. Season 1 is ongoing and will bring new characters to the fold, such as Morty Smith, Black Adam, Stripe, Rick Sanchez, and more in the coming months.
