So here’s a weird thing: The latest Minecraft Console Edition update skips a whole bunch of stuff from the PC version. Or, rather, it jumps ahead: Instead of getting the very large Combat Update, the next PlayStation, Xbox and Wii U update jumps ahead to the newest version of Minecraft, adding features that only recently went live on the PC version. That’s cool: We’re getting igloos, polar bears, fossils and more, way ahead of schedule. We’re also getting a new Chinese Mythology mash-up pack. But what about the rest?

New Minecraft Update: Igloos, Polar Bears, Fossils And Banners

According to Mojang, the new Minecraft Console Edition update will add the following features:

  • Polar bears and their adorable offspring are to be found wandering frozen biomes.
  • Banners! Spruce the place up with your personalised drapery.
  • New terrain generation: Igloos now appear in Arctic biomes, and gargantuan fossils lie beneath the earth awaiting your discovery.
  • Beetroots! You can farm them and turn them into a restorative soup. Delish!
  • Other new blocks: End Bricks, Grass Path, Frosted Ice, Magma, Nether Wart Block, Red Nether Brick and Bone Block.

It’s an odd assortment of new items, some of which come from the Combat Update or earlier and some of which are quite new on the PC version. Polar Bears and fossils, for instance, only came out in June. Banners have been out for ages on PC. Still, it’s a welcome update; most recent changes have focused on Battle Mode.

The new 'Minecraft' update, complete with a Chinese Mythology mash-up pack, arrives on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5.

The strange thing, though, is the lack of the Combat Update—a truly massive set of changes to the game that, as the name implies, transform how combat itself works. And that’s assuredly why we’re not getting the Combat Update yet. It’s a overhaul of some of the game’s most basic systems. It’s not going to be easy to implement on the consoles (although it’s presumably coming eventually). Instead, console developer 4J Studios is skipping ahead and giving us some little stuff to keep us happy. And more fun stuff is always welcome! But let’s hope we get the new content in The End soon—end cities are where the real action is, and it doesn’t look like that is coming along just yet.

The new Minecraft update comes out on Oct. 4 for Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Wii U, with the PS4, PS3, PS Vita and other editions debuting on Oct. 5. Get ready for some polar bears!
