Following the closure of Metal Gear Online developer Kojima Productions LA, fans around the globe have worried that the online portion of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain would never be made available to those enjoying the PC version of the game. But a surprise update from the new Metal Gear Online team should come as welcome news to anyone still waiting for MGO’s PC debut.

Just when some folks were beginning to assume we’d never see Metal Gear Online on PC, Konami has finally announced plans to begin making MGO available to those playing the Steam build of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Granted, the late-night launch plans mean many gamers will probably have to wait until Day Two to get their fill of Metal Gear Online. But, if you ask us, finding out you have to wait an extra 24 hours beats questioning whether or not a project will ever be released.

According to a new update, published to the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain store page, the PC version of Metal Gear Online will fling open its doors at 10:00 p.m. (PST) on Jan. 12. From what we can tell, the PC version of MGO will still feature all of the same content we’ve seen in the console builds. If we had to guess, the beta label likely indicates that Metal Gear Online isn’t quite as stable on PC as it is on consoles. So those planning to dive into MGO this week should probably expect to encounter a few bugs, or other issues, during their time with the game. Then again, it’s always possible Konami is just being cautious, and/or is worried about servers, and just wants to manage user expectations.

Unfortunately, there’s no word on when Metal Gear Online will drop its beta designation. There’s also no word on what kind of post-launch support we can expect from Konami. But, if nothing else, at least the rest of the MGSV community can finally enjoy the online portion of the game.
