Following its very tentative reveal in 2014, publisher CI Games and developer Hexworks now officially unveiled the sequel to Lords of the Fallen, a game arguably considered to be the very first Souls since the Souls games from FromSoftware. However, it would appear that CI Games is taking a soft reboot approach, as the announced sequel is simply called The Lords of the Fallen, set for release sometime in 2023 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam. Check out the announcement trailer for The Lords of the Fallen below.

The trailer’s first half looks very impressive and gives off the atmospheric dark fantasy vibes that evoke feelings of glorious, shining armor and war-torn lands. The music choice for the second half, however, will be a bit jarring to some, utilizing the song Mother by heavy metal band Danzig. That said, while cinematic at this stage, the action looks spectacular and clean, and is definitely what you’d expect from The Lords of the Fallen.

The Lords of the Fallen is a Souls-like, action RPG that takes place in an interconnected world described as five times larger than that of the original game. The Lords of the Fallen is quite weird as it features some same story beats as the original Lords of the Fallen while introducing new elements, so it would be best to describe it as both a sequel and a soft reboot. In the game, the demon God Adyr was defeated. However, eons later, he is on the brink of resurrection, drawing forth the coming of the fabled Dark Crusaders. Players play as one of these Dark Crusaders as they journey through various realms of both the living and the dead to put an end to Adyr’s tyranny once and for all.

Lords of the Fallen follows the same opening beats as The Lords of the Fallen, but it differs in that the latter will feature nine different starting classes. The first game had one set character called Harkon, so this is a great change for those who want a more immersive RPG experience.
