The first real trailer for Godzilla: Resurgence (damnit, why not translate the Shin Gojira title literally and give us God Godzilla!?) is here and it’s very first image is the big guy letting out a big roar. The new Godzilla design combines CGI and a rubber suit to exotic effect. This may be the weirdest looking Godzilla since the disastrous fish-eating iguana from Matthew Broderick v. Godzilla.

The trailer itself is packed with a whole lot of monster footage, portentous music and the strange decision to show lots of lips moving without audio. Check it out:

It will be interesting to see whether Godzilla: Resurgence will get a radically different American version of the trailer, perhaps with less of Godzilla looking like the giant puppet American audiences are less acclimated to accepting.

This new Godzilla reboots the Toho franchise, presumably for ten or twelve hundred future entries. Godzilla: Resurgence is co-directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, who both worked together on Neon Genesis Evangelion. Evangelion fans likely noticed the new Godzilla: Resurgence trailer’s similar fondness for military hardware firing futilely.

Who else can’t wait to see this guy smash the entire world to pieces?
