Gilly is probably the most important person in Game of Thrones right now after last night’s episode.

While Sam was busy ranting about the maesters in the Citadel, Gilly was actually learning about Targaryen history. More specifically, about Prince Rhaegar. For once, the viewers have more information about what’s going on in Game of Thrones than the characters. If your ears didn’t perk up during the scene with Gilly, here’s what you missed.

While Gilly was reading the logs of High Septon Maynard, she stops to ask Sam what the word “annulment” means. Sam explains it means that you put your “wife aside” to marry another person. Gilly then read a passage to Sam from Maynard’s logs about a “Prince Raggar,” who asked for an annulment to marry a second wife in a secret ceremony in Dorne.

You know what’s in Dorne? The Tower of Joy. You know who was found in the Tower of Joy? Lyanna Stark. You know what she was doing in the Tower of Joy? Giving birth to her son, Jon Snow. So if Prince “Raggar” a.k.a. Rhaegar married Lyanna in a secret ceremony, Jon is not a bastard. He is a trueborn Targaryen and has the most legitimate claim to the Iron Throne.

GILLY FOUND THE RECEIPT, Y’ALL.

Now, Sam was too salty about his terrible experience in the Citadel to pay attention to what Gilly said. Hopefully Gilly took that book with her when Sam decided to leave the Citadel and quit trying to become a maester. Can’t blame Sam for leaving; he’s trying to convince really smart people that something beyond their comprehension is happening thousands of miles away. The maesters are supposed to be skeptical of the white walker threat, especially with Dany trying to reclaim the throne . It could very will be a clever distraction.

However, Sam is now equipped with everything he needs to help Jon defeat the Night’s King. Once Gilly informs Jon about “Raggar,” along with some confirmation by Bran, Dany will have to stop insisting Jon bend the knee. Dany will probably be skeptical at first, but she’s gotten to know Jon during his brief stay at Dragonstone. Dany wants the Iron Throne and Jon’s the only one who can give it to her.

Technically, Gilly and Bran have the pieces necessary to solve the puzzle. Gilly has information regarding the marriage, but there are only two people who know Rhaegar and Lyanna had a child: Ned Stark and Howland Reed. Good guy Ned is long gone, but Howland is still alive. Howland’s daughter Meera Reed is on her way home after dropping Bran off in Winterfell. She’ll likely inform her father of her experiences and it’s possible Howland might finally come into the show. However, it’s unnecessary since Bran witnessed Ned and Lyanna’s reunion at the Tower of Joy.
