Show producer Geoff Keighley confirmed the broadcast date for The Game Awards 2022, with the biggest media event in the gaming world set to be held on December 8. It will be a return to an in-person event, with tickets going up on sale and other details to be revealed sometime this fall. The Game Awards 2022 will be held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, and will feature the best of the best games for the year 2022. As with previous iterations, The Game Awards 2022 will be streamed on 40 streaming platforms worldwide, plus a planned IMAX viewing experience. Keighley also confirms the introduction of a new category this year called “Best Adaptation.” This recognizes creative works that adapt video game properties to other media like movies, shows, podcasts, novels, and comic books. In a press release, Geoff Keighley states:
“The Best Adaptation Award is a way for the gaming industry and its fans to tip its hat to creative work that authentically adapts and often adds lore and context to our favorite gaming franchises. With so many game-inspired projects across entertainment, the time is right to honor excellence in adapting video game worlds to other mediums.”
Considering the ground rules for what’s considered an adaptation, possible nominees for this new category include Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Uncharted, Shenmue, Tekken: Bloodline, and The Cuphead Show. Riot Games’ own Arcane is also a possible shoo-in, although it depends if the cutoff period is extended to include certain months in 2021.
Besides the various categories, most importantly, the coveted Game of the Year award, there will once again be a plethora of news and announcements from the latest games and other unannounced titles in development at the biggest gaming studios. The announcements themselves make up a big part of The Game Awards’ popularity, with the event hosting several new trailers and release date reveals for the most anticipated titles coming next year and beyond.
The Game Awards 2022 will be aired on the show’s official YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok media channels on December 8.
