Five Nights At Freddy’s: The Twisted Ones has released early for some pre-order folks, and that means new story spoilers are everywhere. Based on a verified reddit summary , we think the book just might explain some secrets and theories related to the games.

We’re about to get into major SPOILER territory, so consider this your final warning!

As described in our previous introduction summary , The Twisted Ones takes place one year after the events of Scott Cawthon’s last novel, The Silver Eyes. Charlie has moved away to college, and she’s decided to room with her friend Jessica from the previous book. She also lives near her established love interest, John.

Ultimately, she’s roped into a murder investigation when a police officer asks her to examine a body. She realizes the victim has been killed by springlock failures. Fear of the return of William Afton takes her back to Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, where she and Jessica uncover William’s lifeless body.

It’s what happens next, however, that might prove controversial to fans of the lore. Charlie’s visions compel her to return to her old house where she’s drawn to a secret room with a demonic and twisted version of Foxy. Following her attack, she realizes the animatronic had been outfitted with strange hardware made by Afton. The chip makes the animatronics look scarier than they actually appear.

In terms of the established Five Nights At Freddy’s story, any confirmation of hallucinated animatronics might play a major role in proving some of the most controversial fan theories about the games. Especially in the case of Five Nights At Freddy’s 4, which features an exceptionally evil line of Nightmare Animatronics, it’s possible the child we play as isn’t actually witnessing these creatures in real life. Instead, he’s Charlie’s brother, manipulated under the watch of Afton, who’s testing out his new mind-altering tricks.

Beyond Five Nights At Freddy’s 4, however, who’s to say it’s not possible that every single game in the series couldn’t be governed by Afton’s demonic invention? If the people around these animatronics can’t trust what they see, how do we know any of the series’ events actually happened? This so-called “Dream Theory” has been discussed in the past by the community’s most prominent theorists, but The Twisted Ones seems to give it new life.

Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that the contents of the Five Nights At Freddy’s books and games amount to what Cawthon calls “separate continuities.” That means, while they’re both technically canon, not every plot point is shared between the two timelines. In other words, Afton’s twisted chip’s ties to the games remain interesting but unclear.

We’ll leave the rest of the major plot points for fans to discover, but we will say there are a few new animatronics in the book that should make Fazbear devotees pretty excited. So far, we’ve seen evidence of a brown rabbit, a wolf and an ape. Might these characters play a role in Cawthon’s next developing game? We wouldn’t be surprised.

Five Nights At Freddy’s: The Twisted Ones is still listed for official release on June 27. However, given this leak, we wouldn’t be surprised if Cawthon released it sooner.
