Five Nights At Freddy’s movie discussions began over two years ago, and since switching production companies, the film’s former Warner Bros. director has confirmed something most fans probably understood already. The original adaptation has been totally canceled, and he’s not part of the new one.

The news posted with little fanfare about a week ago, but, for enthusiasts of the series, it’s still worth talking about. When one fan asked announced director Gil Kenan about his progress on the project, another follower chimed in to say the 2015 Warner Bros. version had been canceled. Kenan responded in kind by tweeting “this is sadly correct.” He added that he “love[s] FNaF and the community” and that he’s “hoping for a great film” when the finished product finally arrives.

For those not deeply involved in the Five Nights At Freddy’s community, there are lots of developments with the movie that you may have missed over the past few months. After announcing the adaptation was “back at square one” at the end of January , franchise creator Scott Cawthon returned with new partners in Jason Blum and his horror-focused production studio, Blumhouse Productions. No word had been offered as to Kenan’s role in the revived script, but now we know for sure that he has been scrapped.

The good news is, while fans may be waiting a little while for the final film to arrive, it seems like it’s in good hands. Jason Blum has produced critically acclaimed films like Get Out, Whiplash and The Normal Heart, and his studio has also been attached to The Purge franchise as well. In short, this project is being penned by a team with plenty of experience. In a few years when everything is ready to show, hopefully those talents will jump off the screen.

When asked about his aspirations for the film last month, Blum told Fandom he feels secure in the fact that Cawthon himself will be heavily involved with everything from day one. “That game has a rabid fan base, and I would say without Scott it wouldn’t make a good movie,” he mused. “But I think Scott has a very clear idea of what he wants the movie to be, and I think, because we’re using the same creator as the game in Scott, I think it’ll be a great movie.”

Five Nights At Freddy’s got swept up in a whirlwind of viral popularity three years ago, and since then, Cawthon has yet to take a break from the popular franchise. In that time, he has produced six games and two novels under the brand’s name. In fact, the second book, Five Nights At Freddy’s: The Twisted Ones, j ust released earlier this week . He’s also seemingly working on a brand new game that appears to be a sequel to last year’s Five Nights At Freddy’s: Sister Location . Rest assured, there will be lots for fans to do while they wait for the movie’s premiere.

Five Nights At Freddy’s games are available now on PC and mobile devices.
