Fallout 4 PS4 mods have been a controversial topic over the last few weeks, and the Twitter account of Bethesda’s Pete Hines has been a treasure trove of hints about the developer’s bizarre feud with Sony. New posts suggest that mods were fit to release long before their cancellation.

The details arrived when one of Hines’ followers suggested that Fallout 4’s PS4 mods had been scrapped due to a secret exclusivity deal with Microsoft to advertise the feature on Xbox One. After all, Fallout 4 console mods were first announced during Microsoft’s E3 2015 press conference. It was only after the proceedings that the developer clarified the feature was also planned for PS4. Could Microsoft have ponied up some additional cash to get carte blanche?

According to Hines, the answer to that question is a resounding no. “That is absolutely not true,” he said. “We would have released mods on PS4 some time ago if it was up to us. We were told no.” What’s particularly interesting is the second half of this tweet. What it implies is that Fallout 4 PS4 mods were actually in a fully functional state around the same time the feature premiered on Xbox One. Prior to the cancellation bombshell, Bethesda had said plans were in place to debut PS4 mods in June. One would expect that everything could have been in working order before then.

In other words, it seems like no part of Bethesda’s delays or silence on the PS4 mods issue was related to actual development hitches. Everything that happened during the summer lull was apparently for the sake of negotiation. As we recently found out, those negotiations didn’t end well.

Aside from lingering fanboy rumors of an Xbox partnership, Bethesda was also recently forced to confront the fact that other games, like Farming Simulator 17, would be getting mod support on Sony’s console. To those ends, Hines replied that the scope and allowed freedom between the two titles make both ventures entirely different. In his mind, any future mod developments at other studios are “apples and oranges” compared to what Bethesda hoped to deliver.

Fallout 4 is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Mods are only supported across the latter two platforms.
