Get ready for giant bug mayhem to come to PC this week as the hit third-person shooter Earth Defense Force 5 will be available on Steam this July 11, as announced by D3 Publisher. That's tomorrow!

Developed by Sandlot, Earth Defense Force 5 is the fifth main entry in the bug-invasion shooter game. You are on Earth during the year 2022. An all-out attack and invasion has been initiated by still unknown alien life forms. They attack from all fronts. A vast fleet of starships lay siege to an EDF base located outside the city. From below the ground, enormous and bloodthirsty insects attack EDF’s underground base. You choose to become and EDF soldier and fend off these attacks to fight for and save humanity.

Originally released in Japan in December of 2017 and worldwide in 2018 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, Earth Defense Force 5 has been received positively. I think whether you’re a pundit or not, we can all agree that Earth Defense Force 5’s charm is found in its careless participation in mindless and wanton chaos and destruction.

Despite its severely outdated graphics (most of the character assets for our heroes and villains are too “blocky” for my taste), the detail that it provides for each ant dismemberment or kill is too satisfying to ignore. Never mind that when buildings collapse all around you, it looks more like wafers than actual concrete walls, but the sheer amount of visual effects thrown at you makes you not care about the game’s otherwise noticeable imperfections.

You can choose from four classes: Ranger, Wing Diver, Air Raider and Fencer. Utilizing your characters’ synergy is essential, especially if you’re playing with your friends or online. Customization options are also available for each class, from utilizing important upgrades for your skills, weapons, and armors, or just mundane stuff like color coordinating with your squad.

Earth Defense Force 5 currently has its Steam page set up and will be available on July 11. For those who found issue with the shooting mechanics in its console iteration, the PC version will surely make you a much more effective insect exterminator.
