While it's way too early for plot details, we can certainly speculate on the Deadpool 2 cast. Executive Producers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who are already working on the next script, recently spoke to CinemaBlend about what mutants to expect in Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool sequel. It's a safe bet Cable will co-star, but what other Marvel characters can we expect? According to Fox insider sources, Hollywood Heroic reports ‘lucky’ Domino will also star alongside her telekinetic lover, Nathan Summers. Could Magik, Juggernaut, or Copycat join them?

“I do think that’s fair to say you’re going to get some more fun powers, and we don’t like to... I guess the best way to say it is that we like to see diverse mutant powers. So, I don’t think you’ll see like five strong characters, you know, super strong characters in the sequel. I think you’re going to see people with a diverse range of powers,” Rhett Reese said.

If there was one thing missing from Deadpool, it’s mutant action. Aside from Negasonic Teenage Warhead, there are few scenes where mutant powers are featured. We get to see Deadpool’s hand regenerate, but miss out on Colossus’ transformation into steel. Domino and Cable would definitely spice up the Deadpool sequel in the mutant arena.

Speaking to CinemaBlend before Deadpool premiered, Reese revealed Negasonic Teenage Warhead wasn't in the original draft, but he decided to include, and reinvent, the character because they wanted more traditional superpowers. In the comics, Negasonic Teenage Warhead has psychic abilities, but dies fairly quickly after her debut. In Deadpool, she’s seen generating giant explosions.

“It [the original draft] had a lot of gun play and sword play, and Tim [Miller] said he wanted to see more in the way of superpowers and traditional superpowers, so we chose Negasonic Teenage Warhead to fit in there,” Reese said.

While Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead will likely return in Deadpool 2, the writers suggested not to expect too much more of an X-Men crossover. The tangible hurdle getting in the way of merging the two storylines is the fact Deadpool is three decades later than X-Men, the latter of which is currently set in the 1980’s.

“If you look at the ‘Iron Man’ model they had two 'Iron Man' [movies] before they had an ‘Avengers,’ and if left up to us, I think that would be a very prudent path,” Reese explained. Wernick added that he does expect the two timelines to meet eventually, but will leave that up to X-Men Writer/Producer Simon Kingberg.

"Deadpool’s now become a brand and franchise unto himself, independent of the X-Men and that’s great. That gives the studio two franchises in one, but I think it is its own franchise, and you’ll see synergy between those two properties, but they’re two very distinct brands,” Wernick said.

It was previously reported that Wolverine, Taskmaster, Garrison Kane, Sluggo and Wire were written into the initial Deadpool drafts, but were cut. In an interview with i09 , Reese also revealed Angel Dust was originally supposed to be three different characters--Garrison Kane, Sluggo and Wire--but after a budget cut, the writers had to slash precious action scenes and remove their characters. According to IndieWire, Reese and Wernick specifically said the three villains will not be resurrected for the sequel. “You probably won’t [see them in the sequel], but maybe in future go-rounds,” Reese said.

However, due to Deadpool ’s huge success, the writers may have access to more X-Men characters aside from Colossus, a character who did not directly conflict with Bryan Singer’s vision for X-Men . “I think we’ve established ourselves as a franchise now....So I think we’ll be able to sneak into the garage and pull out the Ferrari every once in awhile and take it for a spin,” Wernick told IndieWire. So it sounds like Deadpool 2 won’t fully intrude into X-Men, but the writers may have more leeway with secondary characters whose origins are easier to manipulate and deserve a chance in the spotlight.

On second thought, could the 'Ferrari' be Wolverine? A recent interview with CinemaBlend does give a glimpse of hope that Wolverine could appear in Deadpool 2. "What I would say is we've broken all the rules, so there are no rules that we're unafraid to break, and so, you never know. We would love to be able to have Wolverine go head to head with Deadpool, but we also have to keep in mind that there is this larger X-strategy in place," Wernick said. With X-Men: Apocalypse set for May 27, and Wolverine 3 one year away, anything can happen. Taking into account the writers seem to be straying away from Kingberg's staple X-Men members, it's hard to say who that 'Ferarri' will be.

Magik, Colossus’ sister, would be a smart pick to introduce to the big screen. Her ability to teleport would fit the writer's wishes for characters with more traditional superpowers. Possibly Juggernaut, a friend of Colossus and mutant who boasts the ability to create a mystical force fields? A metamorphic (and X-Force member), like Copycat, would also be an exciting addition to Deadpool 2.

If Deadpool, Cable, and Domino are all set play major roles in Deadpool 2, could the sequel be a setup for X-Force? What characters do you think would fit well in the Deadpool sequel? Sound off in the comments!
