‘Deadpool 2’ Cast: Who Will Play Cable? Tim Miller Describes His Type

Cable’s not your classic villain. In the comics, he actually saves the world from Apocalypse and is the founding father of New Mutants and, later, X-Force (a pugnacious, militant, R-rated offshoot of the X-Men.) Deadpool is all about the anti-hero, and Cable will be taking on a antagonist role in the highly anticipated sequel. Nathan Summers doesn’t take shit from anybody, and Merc’s smartass mouth is bound to end in some sort of tussle.

Deadpool and Cable have a complicated history and adversarial partnership. IGN caught up with Director Tim Miller, who explained Cable will “make a great foil” for Wade Wilson in Deadpool 2 . Deadpool has a lot of frenemies, and Miller compared Cable and Merc’s relationship to Deadpool’s partnership with Colossus.

“There’s a lot about Cable’s history that I like because he’s so intertwined with the world of the X-Men” Miller explained. “Why he was put together with Deadpool – other than that he was in a comic that wasn’t selling well and Deadpool was in a comic that wasn’t selling well so they put them together – it’s the same reason we had Colossus; he’s a straight man. And I think Deadpool needs a straight man. Cable is the ultimate, archetypal, silent, strong and cynical warrior, which Deadpool is not,” he said.

Writer Rhett Reese said he’s looking for an actor with the “Strength, gravitas, a purposefulness that Deadpool doesn’t have.” Paul Wernick added that the actor has to be physically imposing.

“Deadpool’s kind of got ADD, and we think of Cable as someone who locks onto something and is going to get that thing solved no matter what,” Reese revealed in the IGN exclusive.

Cable is rumored to take the lead in an X-Force movie , but the film hasn’t moved forward yet. The same goes for the New Mutants film, which is reportedly being written as we speak. The time-traveling mutant was originally supposed to star alongside Wade Wilson in first Deadpool, but the creative team decided against it. According to Rob Liefeld (via Inverse) , the decision was split right down the middle. It was ultimately decided Deadpool was Ryan Reynolds’ time to shine.

Cable’s role in Deadpool 2 is just the beginning for the blossoming X-Men franchise. Fox officially confirmed Deadpool 2 is on the way earlier this month. Ryan Reynolds, Tim Miller, and the original writers will all return for the sequel. Marvel hasn’t confirmed a release date, but as of now, it’s looking like Deadpool 2 will fill one of two open calendar slots with a Oct. 2017 or Jan. 2018 release date. We should know more once X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27.
