ChinaJoy 2019 begins today, and with it comes a whole host of titles from China-based developers as the country’s biggest gaming expo runs the whole weekend. There are tons of games that are featured, so be sure to stick around for our coverage of everything announced at this event, especially seeing as China is starting to gain footing in video game development – and that means more great games for everyone.

Sony has a pretty big showing for this year’s ChinaJoy, where its PlayStation China Hero Project games are the center of attention. Besides these, there’s also separate projects being developed by the Chinese arm of Sony Interactive Entertainment – one such game is the highly anticipated Monkey King: Hero is Back, a direct adaptation of the Chinese animated movie of the same name. Sony Interactive Entertainment has released a new trailer for Monkey King: Hero is Back, which is expected to have a showcase at ChinaJoy this weekend. Check it out below.

Monkey King: Hero is Back is based on the 2015 hit Chinese animated title of the same name, which in turn is a rendition of the legend of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King and protagonist of the classic Journey to the West novel. The film was very successful with Chinese audiences at the time of its release, earing $153 million at the box office and becoming the highest-grossing animated film in China before it was dethroned by Zootopia and Kung Fu Panda 3.

Monkey King: Hero is Back is about the journey of the three main characters – Monkey King, Pigsy and a child named Liu Jiang – as they fight various monsters using skills and magic. The trailer shows off some of these battles, including one with a gigantic behemoth. I played Smite quite a bit a few years ago, and recognized one of the characters the Monkey King fights – Ne Zha, a child deity who fights with a spear while on a pair of circular roller blades.

Monkey King: Hero is Back is currently being developed for the PlayStation 4, with no release date announced as of yet.

ChinaJoy 2019 will run from August 2 to August 5. Expect more coverage from us as soon as it drops.
