Prolific fantasy author Brandon Sanderson will dip his toes into the world of digital entertainment with The Way of Kings: Escape the Shattered Plains. This VR narrative experience will retell the story of the first novel in The Stormlight Archive series.

Developed by Arcturus, The Way of Kings VR isn’t technically a video game, instead described by the studio as an “interactive narrative experience.” According to a press release, players will be guided through the mythical realm of Roshar by the fairy-like Syl. Taking on the role of Kaladin, players “wield magic, dodge crashing landscapes and battle against perilous magical creatures for survival.”

“For the first time ever, audiences will be able to experience the thrills and see the magic of the fantasy universe Brandon Sanderson created before their very eyes,” Ewan Johnson, Chief Creative Officer of Arcturus, said in the press release. “We can’t wait for fans to get their first glimpse of a unique and truly immersive virtual reality experience.”

The Way of Kings VR experience has been written by industry veteran Joshua Rubin. Rubin’s writing credits also include Assassin’s Creed and Destiny.

Sanderson isn’t directly working on the project, but has voiced support and enthusiasm. “I am beyond excited to finally be able to present this VR experience of The Way of Kings after many months of long, hard work from the teams at DMG and Arcturus,” he said in the release. “It’s the first time my fans will be able to experience a thrilling adventure in Roshar and see what it’s like to be in the Shattered Plains.”

The Way of Kings: Escape the Shattered Plains will be available on Viveport and Steam for HTC Vive for $10.99 starting March 2. Keep an eye on Player. One for our hands-on impressions of The Way of Kings coming shortly.
