Barotrauma is coming out of early access with version 1.0 releasing on Steam this March 13. There will be a lot of new features arriving for this sci-fi u-boat sim as players get to dive into the depths of Europa with a wide range of u-boats, missions, enemies, and different biomes, to name a few.

The game offers a single-player mode along with co-op for up to 16 players as they navigate the depths of Jupiter’s frozen moon Europa and finish different missions. Barotrauma was released in early access back in 2019 and since then, the game has been greatly expanded and improved. Players can look forward to, among others, new monsters, missions, outputs, overhauled tutorials and campaign, improved environments and graphics, and a scripted event system.

Here is the list of updates released since the game became available in early access:

  • New graphics and environments
  • Campaign overhaul
  • Explorable outposts
  • Wrecked submarines, abandoned outposts, and improved alien ruins
  • Submarine upgrading and switching
  • More new monsters and missions
  • New scripted event system
  • Talent system for character progression
  • Reworked tutorials

In a statement, Barotrauma Lead Developer Joonas Rikkonen revealed that they're happy to have reached version 1.0 after all these years. He added that they can't wait to hear what players think not only of the faction overhaul but also the real ending of the campaign.

Barotrauma lets players journey across a chilling ocean filled with strange creatures and alien ruins, and work with crewmates to complete missions. The thrilling and often hilarious chaos present in Barotrauma is fun to play and watch, thanks to the procedurally-generated levels, ridiculous ragdoll physics, and full mod support.
